LANGUAGE ARTS
FAIRY TALE STUDY The students performed a Cinderella Reader's Theatre in groups. They practiced for about a week and were excited to use some props while presenting to their peers.
Inspired by Cinderella, the students were prompted with the sentence starter "If I had a magic wand..." They wrote a couple sentences about what they would do if they had a magic wand. I loved reading all their unique and extravagant ideas.
The students are in the planning stage of their very own fairy tale. To begin, they created and brainstormed their very own fairy tale character and had to write 6 descriptive statements about the character. For example, what the character was wearing, hair colour/length, expression on their face. etc. They will write the beginning, middle and end of their fairy tale this upcoming week.
MATH
During the week, the class continues to practice counting by 5s to 100. Be sure to practice at home! The students in 1C explored Measurement this week: length, mass and area. They passed through numerous stations that had a special challenge that they had to complete for a specific type of measurement. On the first day they had length challenges.
On the second day they were challenged with mass tasks.
And on the third day they had to complete area challenges.
Next week, they will finish up their measurement unit with a capacity carnival!
SCIENCE
The students have been learning all about animals and their habitats. We finished up the last habitat - wetlands.
1C was asked to draw four different types of animals on a sheet of paper that was divided into four sections. Once this was complete, they cut out each animal and brought their drawings to a group where they were asked to sort their animals based on a sorting rule their group decided on. Next, I introduced the six types of animals (but did not provided them with the definition): mammals, amphibians, birds, fish, reptiles, and insects. It was up to the students and their group members to decide what types of characteristics were associated to a type of animal and sort their drawings accordingly. We came together as a class and sorted all of the drawings into the six categories based on the students' definitions of each type of animal.
