Language Arts

I read the book, Too Many Toys! by David Shannon to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  The book is about a boy named Spencer who has too many toys. His mom falls over them, his dad trips over them, there are toys absolutely everywheere in the house. His mom and dad say it is time to give some of them away. Reluctantly, Spencer packs up some toys in a box to give away, except for one. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child!
Throughout the week, the students explored the -eg -et and -en word families with words like begpeg, leg, pet, wet, jet, net, hen, pen, men. The class did a guided drawing of a Max from the movie "Secret Life of Pets"!

As a class, we continue to build stamina in Reading to Someone. The students almost reached their goal of 15 minutes and went all the way to 14 minutes and 10 seconds, wowza!
During Writing Workshop this week, we wrote tried to focus our sentences to portray one thought and to use interesting/descriptive words. The students drew a picture of Rudolph the Reindeer and then wrote a couple of sentences about Rudolph. 1C really tried their best sounding out words they didn't know and referencing the word wall for some Christmas related words.

Math

In Math this week, students focused on reading and writing numerals to 20. Throughout the week, 1C played a recognition game called "I Have, Who Has". The students completed a number 1-20 practice booklet to demonstrate their numeral writing skills and showing a numeral in multiple ways. Way to go 1C!

Science

The class is learning new topics in their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, the students can show that some living things change throughout the day. Such as an owl. Owls sleep during the day and are awake at night. In the upcoming week we will be discussing human preparations for seasonal changes.
The students continue to use Explore Tubs when they have completed their work and made sure to do their best work. Each tub focuses on a different topic in our Seasonal Changes unit, for instance, cloud formation, dressing for the weather, extreme weather, and shadows.

Social Studies

For the rest of December, the students of 1C are hopping on the Polar Express to explore how different countries celebrate Christmas. Our first stop was Canada where we talked about various family traditions and learned a little bit more about Canadian Christmas traditions. Next stop, Hawaii (USA) and Mexico!

Enjoy Your Weekend!
