Phew! What a great end to our week. The Terry Fox Walk was a huge success. The students of 1C will sleep well tonight, we took the long way (oops!). Ms. Starostecki needs to learn her way around Devon. There were a lot of laughs during the walk especially when they started to chant, "Hotdogs, hotdogs, we all scream for hotdogs!" We tracked how many steps we took during the walk and we made about 13 000 steps! Wow!  We needed a little break... Earlier this week, Grade 1C took part in a Bus Safety program. They learned about the rules of the bus, the emergency exits on the bus, and how to be safe around a bus. Congratulations to our Student of the Week! We are so lucky to have you in our class. Lanaguage Arts I sent out the last of the All About Me bags, so this will be the final week. If your child receives an All About Me bag, please follow the instructions and return the bag after the weekend. We will use these bags to learn more about our classm

A lot of excitement in Grade 1C this week! On Wednesday, we had a special guest (a soldier!) come into our classroom and talk about the history of Lord Strathcona Horse Musical Ride. Shortly after, the Grade 1's gathered outside for a short presentation about a horse named Sam and one of the soldiers that rides him. The Grade 1's learned about the various equipment that is used during the Musical Ride and even got a chance to pet our new friend Sam! Language Arts During Read to Self this week, Grade 1C made it all the way to 6 min. and 15 sec.! I am so proud of them, they are really working hard in building their Read to Self stamina. The students practiced sorting their beginning consonant sounds (Tt, Gg, Nn, and Pp). They can sort most of the sounds independently and they tried sorting them with a friend. I will continue to send home "All About Me" bags with some students each week. If your child has an All About Me bag, please follow

Language Arts The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Lips the Fish strategy. Lips the Fish gets their lips ready for the beginning and ending sounds. As a whole group, we have been reading "It's Back to School We Go" by Ellen Jackson which illustrates and follows the daily life of a student in a variety of different countries such as Kenya, Russia, and the United States. In Printing, the students practiced and refined their "half moon letters": c,d,g, and q. I will continue to send home "All About Me" bags with some students each week. If your child has an All About Me bag, please follow the instructions, and return the bag after the weekend. We will use these bags to learn more about our classmates, learn about asking/answering questions, and participate in shared writing. Math The students learned a couple of new terms in math this week. Subit

Hello Parents!

The Grade 1's have experienced their first full (almost!) week. The students are starting to find their way around the classroom as they practice their daily routines. They are starting to understand that they serve an important role in the classroom. All of our families should be super proud of their first grader because they are kind, helpful, and brighten up our classroom in their own special way. Our weekly learning adventures included: Mathematics: We continued to work on two units: number sense (with a focus on numbers 1-20). This week we ordered numbers from 0-10. Each student was responsible for organizing a set of number cards and writing their numbersw in order from 0 to 10. Also, we practiced proper number formation with the help of some number formation poems! The students really enjoyed the book "Chicka Chicka, 1, 2, 3" by Bill Martin Jr.  that explained number formation in an interesting way. In our pattern unit, the students began their week by sortin
