Week 12

MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI
If you have not already done so, please send a pair of headphones for your child. 1C will be learning how to use Chromebooks on Wednesday. The headphones will be kept in a safe place in the classroom. The students need to have headphones while they are using the Chromebooks.
Also, on the inside cover of your child's agenda you will also notice a green strip of paper. This paper contains your child's log in information for Mathletics. This is an awesome website if you would like your child to practice their math skills during their screen time at home. The students will learn how to log into their Mathletics account next week.

MATH

This week, 1C's math goal this week was to learn how to count on from a given number and how to count backwards from 10. Next week the students will be learning their number words and identifying the number words in various games and activities.
We found a group of 10 items around the classroom...

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Waber to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. It is a delightful story of a little boy who struggles whether or not to bring his favourite teddy bear, Tah Tah, to his first sleep over at a friend's house. Ira doesn't want his friend to laugh at him, but is concerned that he has never slept without Tah Tah. Ira weighs the pros and cons, aided by some solicited and unsolicited advice from family members. Without his teddy, Ira enjoys the night until the boys tell scary stories in bed. When Reggie needs his teddy bear, Ira realizes it's okay to have a teddy.

WRITING 1C focused on writing sentences that contain a capital letter, a period, and have proper spacing in between words. This week, the students drew a picture of a parrot. Once they created their parrot scene the students wrote about the parrot and details about the picture.

WORDS THEIR WAY Throughout the week, the students explored the -ag and -ap word family with words like tag, bag, rag, wag, nap, lap, sap, cap.

RAINBOW WORDS Next week, we will be reviewing all of the Orange Words.  I encourage for you to practice Rainbow Words with your child to increase their exposure and improve their word recognition. I will be informally assessing each student at the end of each week to see if they are able to read and recognize their Rainbow Words.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's are working towards their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Someone. This week they made it to 10 minutes! Keep up the great work Grade 1. While they reading the students are practicing the Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy.
Chunky Monkey looks for hunks and chunks they know inside a word.
Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound                         slowly then say it fast.
Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book.
Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word.

SOCIAL STUDIES

1C talked about ways the students belong to a community, Devon. The students provided answers to what Devon is...

SCIENCE

This week, we finished up our Creating Colour unit and now 1C is starting a Weather & Seasons unit. The students learned that light can separate into the colours of the rainbow. There are different ways we can separate light. You can shine a light through a prism and place a water glass on a table and place it on a white piece of paper. Shine a flashlight through the glass and a rainbow appears on the paper!

Highlights of the Week...
