Week 33

MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI
All Grade One classes will be doing a building unit over the next month.  We are asking that students start collecting and bringing in the following materials by MONDAY, JUNE 10th.  Raid your blue bags / bins.
  • 2 shoe boxes each (but if they can bring more, that would be great!)
  • paper towel rolls
  • plastic lids of all sizes
  • variety of boxes (cereal, pasta, crackers, etc)
  • small, clean yogurt / applesauce/ pudding containers
  • cardboard
  • bottle lids / bottle caps

LANGUAGE ARTS
RAINBOW WORDS The students learned new Purple Rainbow Words: them, time, tree, two water, where The students will be assessed on all of the Rainbow Words during this upcoming week. Regular review of these high frequency words is highly recommended.

WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students have been learning about the cr-, cl-,fr-,fl- Blends. This week, our focus was words that begin with "cr-, cl-,fr-,fl-" and the students sorted words like cry, cracker, clip, cloud, frog, frown, flag, fly
LISTENING GAMES I read the book Koala Lou by Mem Fox to 1C last week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book last week. When Koala Lou's mother becomes so busy that she forgets to tell her firstborn how much she loves her, Koala Lou enters the Bush Olympics, intending to win an event and her mother's love all at one time.
WRITING The students did a lot of writing this week! They finished up their opinion piece "The Best Part Of Me"and they were so excited to take a picture of their favourite part of themselves. They will share their writing with another class later this week.  
The students learned about Acrostic Poems and they created a poem for Mother's Day in the style of an Acrostic Poem.

MATH
The students in 1C learned how to use a number line and/or number chart to help them solve subtraction equations. We even created a human number line and hopped down the line!

SOCIAL STUDIES
The main focus this week was the Rights and Responsibilities that children hold in their community.  I read the wonderful book "I Have a Right to Be a Child"  by Alain Serres. The students made a list of their rights as children. 
Later this week, I read the book "David Gets in Trouble" by David Shannon. The students looked at the various situations David found himself in the story and they determined what kind of rules he was breaking. The students realized that the word responsibility is like having small "job" and/or chore. The students shared their responsibilities that they might have at home or at school.  

SCIENCE
This week the students learned the parts of the plant and the function of a stem, roots, leaves, flowers and leaves. Each of the students will be observing a small seed grow in their very own mini green house.
