WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students have been learning about the sl-, bl-, pl- Blends. This week, our focus was words that begin with "sl, bl, or pl" and the students sorted words like plus, plate, slug, sleep, blimp, block.
LISTENING GAMES I read the book The Grumpy Ladybug by Eric Carle to 1C last week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book last week. This Eric Carle story is about one grouchy ladybug that spends an entire day looking to fight other creatures. The grouchy ladybug has horrible manners, is very rude, and bullies others. This book is a great opportunity to teach children about empathy, appropriate social skills, and treating others with respect. This book integrates math through literature by offering an opportunity to teach children about time and the concept of size.
Secondly, they started another opinion writing piece based on a book. I read the book " The Best Part of Me" by ... the students chose a body part that they think is the best part of themselves and wrote a few reasons why it is their favorite. The good copy will be typed out on the Chromebooks. The grade 1s are pretty excited about that part of the writing piece.

WRITING The students finished writing their good copies for their Rain poem and shared them with the class. I loved hearing them use rhythm while reading out their poems. Way to go 1C!
This week, the students began writing a new style of poem, a sensory poem. 1C wrote about what their senses experience during the season of spring. They followed a template while planning their poem. They had to name the season, describe something they would see/smell/hear/ taste/feel and lastly state the season again.
Secondly, they started another opinion writing piece based on a book. I read the book " The Best Part of Me" by ... the students chose a body part that they think is the best part of themselves and wrote a few reasons why it is their favorite. MATH
The students in 1C continued to use multiple strategies to solve subtraction equations and solve subtraction math problems. They learned two new math games! One is called "Subtraction Connect 4" and the other is called "Subtraction Face Off" similar to Addition Face Off but the player with the difference with the smallest amount wins the round!
SOCIAL STUDIES
The main topic this week was the difference between Urban, Rural, and Suburban communities. I read the book "Little House by" Each student was given a sentence strip which they had to read and decide (with the rest of their class) which community best represented that sentence. I.e. you might see a farm here OR located right outside of a city.
Once this activity was complete, students were divided into partners and they had to complete a sorting activity of their own only this time they received images instead of sentences. At the end of the week, the students had to draw (or provide words/phrases) about each of the communities: urban, rural, suburban.
