Week 26

MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...
Our Parent Fundraising Committee is doing a Wilhauk Beef Jerky fundraiser. You can tally up your totals and submit the whole amount through Power School or you can send in cash or a cheque. The majority of fundraising this year has been utilized to support the new playground project. This fundraiser will go towards some expenses at the school that this committee regularly supports. This includes things like: Mathletics, special art supplies through classroom budgets, school agendas and our Fun Day in June. If you have any questions, please let one of the office staff know.

LANGUAGE ARTS

RAINBOW WORDS The students learned five Blue Rainbow Words: look, make, mom, now. The students will be assessed at the end of each week. Regular review of these high frequency words is highly recommended.

WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students reviewed and sorted digraphs TH, SH, CH and WH.

LISTENING GAMES I read the book That's What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. This story is a fun tale for mischievous learners of all ages. We all know that a leprechaun’s job is to leave a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but sometimes friends of leprechauns want to have a little fun and mischief along the way. A fun story by a great children’s author.

READING While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know. Flip the Dolphin flip the vowel sound, try the long and short vowel sounds.
MATH
Students learned to solve simple addition word problems with 2 addends and sums within 10. They continue to practice using multiple strategies to solve addition equations.

SCIENCE
This week, students learned about the sense of smell and taste and the body part that we use for both. The nose and the tongue. 1C found out that the tongue has 10 000 tastebuds on its surface! The tongue is responsible for us to be able to taste 4 different flavours: sour, salty, sweet, and bitter. The students sorted food items to their matching tastebud.

SOCIAL STUDIES
In 1C, students are completing a giant map of the town of Devon after learning about symbols and landmarks. They are labelling streets, creating buildings, and drawing symbols for places and businesses around Devon.
