LANGUAGE ARTS
BOOK STUDY The students have been carrying out writing activities on The Love Monster by Rachel Bright. The students drew a new monster. This became the monster that they would love to create. They finished writing a descriptive paragraph to go along with their drawing. The students shared their paragraph with the rest of the class. I am blown away with our class' writing, AMAZING! I am one proud teacher.
READING While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know. Flip the Dolphin flip the vowel sound, try the long and short vowel sounds.
RAINBOW WORDS The students learned five Blue Rainbow Words: dog, eat, had, from, got. The students will be assessed at the end of each week. Regular review of these high frequency words is highly recommended.
WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students reviewed and sorted digraphs CH and SH. They provided me with words that start and end with the digraph ch and sh.READING While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. MATH
The students related and compared numbers to 20 with the symbols < > or =. They nailed this concept so I challenged them with larger numbers up to 100. Next, the students learned to read and write numbers (11-20) and correctly match them to numerals and quantities. Lastly, 1C used ordinal numbers and words to tell the position of objects 1 to 10.
This upcoming week, students will be starting their Addition and Subtraction to 10 unit AND learning to skip count by 5s to 100. This will be a good thing to practice at home regularly.

SCIENCE
This week, 1C finished their Over and Under the Snow project. I read the book Over and Under the Snow to the class. This book does an excellent job showing animal activity during the season of winter.
The students drew images of animals and humans taking part of winter activities "over and under the snow". They glued their images on a classroom mural. Next week, they will write 2-4 sentences about what animals and humans do "over and under the snow".
The students reviewed the parts of the eye. They also explored the sense of touch and textures that are associated with the sense of touch. The students found things around the classroom that were rough, squishy, fuzzy and hard.

SOCIAL STUDIES
I read the book ABC of Canada by Per-Henrik Gürth and Kim Bellafontaine. This lovely book illustrates some amazing symbols and landmarks of Canada. The students answered questions such as "What are the two official languages of Canada?"
"What do you call a person that lives in Canada?"
"What does the Canada flag look like?"
