Week 22

MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...
I am proud to be leading Session 2 of the BOKS program at RBES! As a BOKS trainer, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this (free!) program. By the end of a program session, I have watched students become more confident, stronger and adopt a health-conscious mindset. The program aims to get elementary school aged children moving in the morning to help ready their brains for a day of focused learning. BOKS was founded on the principal that ACTIVE KIDS = ACTIVE MINDS. Research has show that exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains. Click on the link to watch a quick video about what the BOKS program is all about! I encourage you to learn more about the BOKS program at www.bokskids.ca. Mrs. Kloschinsky will be sending out an email with further information and a registration link next week. You have until March 1 to register your child and the BOKS program will begin on March 5th.
If you are interested in seeing BOKS in action, we will be hosting a BOKS Family Fitness Night on February 26th from 5:30-6:15pm. Feel free to stop by and join in on the fun!

LANGUAGE ARTS

BOOK STUDY  This week the students started a new book study on The Love Monster by Rachel Bright. Before being read The Love Monster the students drew a picture of what they think a monster looks like in their imagination.
After reading the book, the students shared their ideas for a monster they would LOVE to create. I jotted down their suggestions and we put them into a chart to organize their ideas. The students were encouraged to provide specific details. Next week, they will be writing about a monster they would love.

LISTENING GAMES I read the book Jennifer Jones Won't Leave Me Alone by Frieda Wishinsky to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. This sweet “love” story is about a boy who is admired and adored by a fellow classmate who has a crush on him and tells him and shows him in every way, every day how much she loves him. He can’t stand it and wishes for her to move, until one day he finds out that Jennifer’s mom got transferred and now she is moving. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is the moral of this story....after she’s gone, he wants her back.
WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students learned about the digraph SH. They provided me with words that start and end with the digraph sh. The students drew a picture of a shell and learned the fun little tongue twister: "Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore."
READING While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know. Flip the Dolphin flip the vowel sound, try the long and short vowel sounds.

MATH

This week, the students correctly read and wrote the numerals 0 to 20 independently. They also learned a new game, "Roll to 100", so much fun!
The next day students learned how to make reasonable estimates of how many in a group (to 20). Count the group to see if estimate was close.. The students learned how to make "good guesses". At the end of the week, we celebrated the 100th day of school and the students took part in numerous activities and stations to celebrate the number of 100!

SCIENCE
In 1C, we started a new unit exploring the Five Senses. The students matched each of the senses to the body part that it uses.
The students sorted images according to the sense that best represents them: sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell.
