LANGUAGE ARTS
BOOK STUDY The students retold the sequence of events and were asked to order the characters according to their appearance in the book. Once that was completed the students were asked to re-tell the story by writing about the beginning, middle and end of the story. Take a look at their fun little project...
LISTENING GAMES I read the book The Biggest, Best Snowman by Margery Culyer to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Little Nell, the smallest and quietest member of a very loud family thinks she’s too little to do anything by herself until one day, with the help of her forest friends, Reindeer, Hare and Bear Cub, she builds the biggest, best snowman EVER!
RAINBOW WORDS Students were introduced and reviewed five Green Rainbow Words: be, came, day, did. Please review at home. I introduced a new game to the class called KABOOM!
WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students learned three new word families: -ug, -ut and -un. They sorted and matched various pictures to the correct word.
SOUNDS & BLENDS 1C learned three new sounds this week: ou/oa/o_e/-o, er/ir/ur. They drew a picture of a cone, turtle. They wrote a short sentence for each of the drawings.
READING This week, 1C is reviewed the newest reading strategy: Flip the Dolphin. While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know. Flip the Dolphin flip the vowel sound, try the long and short vowel sounds.
