LANGUAGE ARTS

BOOK STUDY Earlier this week, I read The Mitten by Jan Brett. The students retold the sequence of events and were asked to order the characters according to their appearance in the book. Once that was completed the students were asked to re-tell the story by writing about the beginning, middle and end of the story. Take a look at their fun little project...
RAINBOW WORDS Students were introduced and reviewed five Green Rainbow Words: that, then, this, too, was. Please review at home.

WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students learned three new word families: -og, -ot and -op. They sorted and matched various pictures to the correct word.

ANIMATED LITERACY 1C learned three new sounds this week: long ooshort oo and ch. They drew a picture of a tooth, foot, book and a chimp. They wrote a short sentence for each of the drawings.

READING This week, 1C is reviewed the newest reading strategy: Flip the Dolphin. While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know. Flip the Dolphin flip the vowel sound, try the long and short vowel sounds.

MATH

This week, 1C learned how to compose and decompose a number up to 10. They used various mathematical tools and manipulatives to help them figure out numerous combinations and number bonds.

SCIENCE

Students discussed the season winter. They provided suggestions for what they might see, feel, hear, taste and smell during winter time. 1C offered examples of the weather, the clothing, the animals, the plants, the activities and the holidays that are specific to the season of winter.
