A MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...
The students are getting more and more practice using Chromebooks in the classroom. For Language Arts, they have been using a program called Teach Your Monster to Read. The link to access our classroom's login page is: https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/u/513063 . You can also find it on the left hand side of the classroom blog under Links --- Language Arts. Your child's username is their first name.

LANGUAGE ARTS

READING The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self and Read to Someone. While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know.










RAINBOW WORDS 1C worked on the Yellow Rainbow Words: little, no, not, one, out. Next week, we will focus on the Yellow Rainbow Words: see, she, so, some. 

 BOOK STUDY Based on the book The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, the Grade 1s closely studied the characters, beginning, middle and end of the story. They designed their own Gruffalo and used descriptive words to describe their creature's body. The students used sentence starters to write a descriptive paragraph about the Gruffalo they designed. 

MATH

The students learned how to subitize up to 10. Click here for one of the songs we used to practice subitizing. They learned a game called Find It! that is all about recognizing groups of objects faster and more accurately.

Housekeeping Reminders: We have had a lot of practice for our Christmas Concert throughout the week but please be sure to practice the songs with your child. Check their book bags for the lyrics for "Frosty the Snowman" ( https://youtu.be/u0QqQNIpeiw ) and "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas"  ( https://youtu.be/VGLGJV01C0Q ) Take the weekend to get plenty of rest, we have a busy week coming up! Language Arts The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Lips the Fish strategy. Lips the Fish gets their lips ready for the beginning and ending sounds. As a whole group, we have been reading "It's Back to School We Go" by Ellen Jackson which illustrates and follows the daily life of a student in a variety of different countries such as Kenya, Russia, and the United States. In Printing, the students practiced and refined their "half moon letters": c,d,g, and q. I will continue to send home "All About Me" bags with some students each week. If your child has an All About Me bag, please follow the instructions, and return the bag after the weekend. We will use these bags to learn more about our classmates, learn about asking/answering questions, and participate in shared writing. MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI Hello Robina Families,  We hope you have a great summer! Shortly before school starts (late August) you will receive an email from your child’s new teacher letting you know what to expect in September in their classroom.  We will have a Meet the Staff  BBQ Event for all of our families on Thursday, August 29 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm.  The first day of school for Grade 1-4 students is September 3, 2019.
