Week 7

MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...

I am proud to be leading the second year of the BOKS program at RBES! As a BOKS trainer, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this (free!) program. By the end of a program session, I have watched students become more confident, stronger and adopt a health-conscious mindset. The program aims to get elementary school aged children moving in the morning to help ready their brains for a day of focused learning. BOKS was founded on the principal that ACTIVE KIDS = ACTIVE MINDS. Research has show that exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains. Click on the link to watch a quick video about what the BOKS program is all about! I encourage you to learn more about the BOKS program at www.bokskids.ca. The registration link can be found on the Weekly Update. You have until October 30th to register your child and the BOKS program will begin on November 6th.

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Bats at the Library by Brian Lies to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. An open library window is an invitation for a colony of bats in this sequel to Bats at the Beach (2006). Once inside, older bats look for favourite books, while younger ones explore and play. Story time settles everyone down and transports them into the tales, filled with bat characters playing new roles.
READING The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they read up to 7 minutes and 20 seconds! Way to go! While they reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast.

RAINBOW WORDS 1C worked on the Red Rainbow Wordsbut, can, for, have, I

WRITING I read the book Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman. The students created a story map for the book. The next day, they sequenced the order of events in the book. Each day they drew a new photo to match the sentence on the page in their readers.

MATH

This week, the students learned what a pattern is by identifying, describing and extending repeating patterns. They used this knowledge to identify the pattern rule and what repeats.

SCIENCE

This week, the Grade 1s learned about the three primary colours: red, yellow, blue. The students went on a scavenger hunt around the classroom to find things for each of the colours. This is what they found...
I read the book Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni to the class. It is a great book about primary colours and secondary colours. Students They learned that different combinations of primary colours can create new colours.
Red + Blue = Purple
Blue + Yellow = Green
Yellow + Red = Orange
