Week 24

MESSAGE FROM MS.STAROSTECKI

Robina Baker will be having its Fifth Annual Spell-a-thon on Wednesday, March 14th. The list will be 50 core words for each grade from 1-4, 10 words for Kindergarten students and Pre-K will be tested on the spelling of their name. You may sponsor in any way you want (ie. 0.25¢per word spelled correctly). We hope this will be an added incentive for children to become better spellers, as well as a fundraiser for our school. Last year’s Spell-a-thon was a huge success and the students were able to benefit from technology added to the classrooms, lower swimming lesson costs and reduced field trip bussing fees. The monies raised this year will be used to support field trips, swimming lessons and health and wellness projects (this could include items such as new gym equipment, new playground balls, frisbees etc., mindful tools for classrooms, emotional wellness resources and items for health and wellness days). For every $10 in pledges received, the child’s name will be entered in a draw to win prizes. As well, the class with the most 100%’s wins a Dairy Queen ice cream party and the class that raises the most money will win a Dominos pizza party!

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Dr. DeSoto by William Steig to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Dr. DeSoto, the mouse dentist is very good at his work. He treats small animals in his normal dentist's chair and bigger animals by climbing on a ladder. But he and his assistant are very careful not to let in animals that eat mice. One day, a forlorn-looking fox with a terrible toothache convinces them he needs treatment. They take pity on him, but once Doctor DeSoto has pulled out the bad tooth, the fox feels a little too much like his old self! so before he returns, the DeSotos come up with a plan that lets Doctor DeSoto finish the job without getting eaten.
WRITING
1C read the book "The Best Part of Me". We discussed what the word opinion means. It is something that we think. The students learned that not everyone has the same opinion on every topic. During Writer's Workshop, 1C wrote three sentences about what they thought was the best part of themselves. The students had to make sure that they included a two reasons for their opinion, a capital letter at the beginning of their sentence, appropriate spacing and punctuation at the end of their sentences. I loved reading their reasons why a certain body part was their favorite thing about themselves.

WORDS THEIR WAY Throughout the week, the students reviewed the consanant blend "stwith words such as stump, stool, stop, stick.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's are working towards staying focused for 15 minutes during each of their centers during Daily 5. During Daily 5, they complete all of their centers including Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listening to Reading and Word Work. Keep up the hard work Grade 1!
While they reading the students are practicing the Skippy Frog, Flip the Dolphin, Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy.
Skippy Frog who skips the word. Reads to the end of the sentence. Hops back and re-                         reads the sentence.
Flip the Dolphin tries the short vowel. If it doesn't sound right, flip the sound to the long                     vowel and try it again.
Chunky Monkey looks for hunks and chunks they know inside a word.
Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound                         slowly then say it fast.
Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book.
Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word.

HOME READING The books will be exchanged every Friday. You may also read books from home or the library, just make sure you log it! Our classroom goal is to read (or have a book read to us) at least 7 books per week.

LIBRARY Please bring back your child's library book each Monday so they may exchange it for a new one.

MATH

This week, the Grade 1s focused on counting on to 20 to detwermine how many more, as well as, couting backwards from 20. They used their number sense skills to compare numbers to 20 using the symbols < > or  =. They played a fun math card game called Guestimate.

The students are also learning to skip count by 5s to 100. Your child can practice counting by 5s at home too!

SCIENCE

This week, 1C learned some "Senses" vocabulary. As well as matching each sense to the correct body part. They used their new learned skills and sorted objects based on the sense that is primarily used.

SOCIAL STUDIES

1C learned about symbols. We looked at various examples of symbols and what they represent. The students were then asked to sort a group of images and decided whether it was a symbol or not a symbol. Next, week the students will explore Canadian symbols and Devon landmarks.
