Please go on to Powerschool and fill out the permission form.  1C skates from 12:15 to 12:45pm each day that week and will be walking to the arena at around 12pm. HOME READING The books will be exchanged every Friday. You may also read books from home or the library, just make sure you log it! Our classroom goal is to read (or have a book read to us) at least 7 books per week.

LIBRARY Please bring back your child's library book each Monday so they may exchange it for a new one.

MATH

This week, 1C learned about odd and even numbers. We read a book about Odd Todd and Even Steven. It is about the arrival of Cousin Odd Todd which greatly upsets Even Steven who likes everything to come in even numbers, his pets, his library books, and even his pancakes!

Another goal that the students worked on what using counting to find out how many (11-20). They connected the quantity to a numeral.

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, The Biggest Best Snowman by Margery Cuyler to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Little Nell, the smallest and quietest member of a very loud family thinks she's too little to do anything by herself until one day, with the help of her forest firnds, Reindeer, Hare, and Bear Cub, she builds the biggest, best snowman EVER!

WRITING 1C read the poem "My Winter Friend". We examined it in various ways. The students looked for Rainbow Words, highlighted rhyming words, and filled in the missing words. Next week 1C will be writing about snowmen!

WORDS THEIR WAY Throughout the week, the students explored the -ill, -in and -ig word family with words like hill, mill, pin, win, pig, big.

RAINBOW WORDS This week 1C was working on the Green Words : an, back, be, came, day. Next week, 1C will be working on the following Green Words: went, will, what, was. I encourage for you to practice Rainbow Words with your child to increase their exposure and improve their word recognition. I will be informally assessing each student at the end of each week to see if they are able to read and recognize their Rainbow Words.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's are working towards staying focused for 15 minutes during each of their centers during Daily 5. This week they completed all of their centers including Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listening to Reading and Word Work. Keep up the hard work Grade 1!
While they reading the students are practicing the Flip the Dolphin, Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy.
Flip the Dolphin tries the short vowel. If it doesn't sound right, flip the sound to the long                     vowel and try it again.
Chunky Monkey looks for hunks and chunks they know inside a word.
Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound                         slowly then say it fast.
Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book.
Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word.

SCIENCE

In 1C, the students are learning about seasonal changes. This week they focused on the season of winter. They completed an "All About Winter" page and brainstormed activities exclusive to winter. Today the students created an acrostic poem about WINTER. Way to go Grade 1s!

SOCIAL STUDIES

1C have been leraning about maps. This week we took a look at the various types of maps such as treasure maps, school maps, road maps and city maps. They created their very own map: a map of their day. 1C students drew pictures to show their schedule from morning, afternoon and night.
