MATH

This week, 1C's math goal this week was to review what we have learned so far in the year. The students played some math games to jog their memory and carried out math tasks around the classroom. At the end of the week, they logged on to Mathletics and practiced their math skills on the featured activities. Your child may use Mathletics at home.  Their log in information glued to the front page of their agenda.

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book,  Snow by Cynthia Rylant to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Cynthia Rylant’s lyrical descriptions of the sights and feelings evoked by falling snow blend gorgeously with the rich and beautiful world created by Lauren Stringer’s illustrations, in which a young girl, her friend, and her
grandmother enjoy the many things a snowy day has to offer.

WRITING 1C was wondering why each snowflake is different. They looked at numerous photos of snowflakes and watched a video of snow falling from the sky. Using their imaginations they wrote a few sentences answering the questions: Why Are All Snowflakes Different?

WORDS THEIR WAY Throughout the week, the students explored the -ut, -un and -ug word family with words like nut, cut, run, bun, bug and rug.

RAINBOW WORDS This week 1C was working on  the Green Words : an, back, be, came, day. I encourage for you to practice Rainbow Words with your child to increase their exposure and improve their word recognition. I will be informally assessing each student at the end of each week to see if they are able to read and recognize their Rainbow Words.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's are working towards their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Someone. This week they made it to 13 minutes and 7 seconds! Keep up the great work Grade 1. While they reading the students are practicing the Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy.
Chunky Monkey looks for hunks and chunks they know inside a word.
Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound                         slowly then say it fast.
Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book.
Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word.

SCIENCE

In 1C, the students are learning about seasonal changes. This week they focused on human preparations as the seasons change. They sorted clothing into the appropriate season, as well as, described tasks like changing tires on cars for winter, plugging in fans or using AC in the summer and raking leaves in the fall.

SOCIAL STUDIES

1C is learning about maps and globes and the difference between the two. By looking at many examples the students realised that maps are flat and globes are round. The students shared many examples of types of maps such as trail maps, maps of a house, treasure map, road maps, etc.
