This week the students learned about the term quantity. The students are now able to recognize that quantity means how many. They can match quantity to a number. 1C's math goal this week was so correctly identify small arrangements of objects or dots without counting, this process is called subitizing.

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronn to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. The story is about the adventures of Spider, whose friends with Worm and Fly. Spider goes to school and learns a few valuable lessons. This book interweaves fun facts about spiders into a whimsical, entertaining fiction story.

WRITER'S WORKSHOP 1C wrote about bats this week. They drew a detailed picture of their bat in their designed setting and wrote a few sentences describing their bat. Awesome work Grade 1s!

WORDS THEIR WAY Throughout the week, the students explored the -at word family with words like cat, bat, sat, hat, mat, fat.

RAINBOW WORDS Next week, we will be working on the following Orange Words: my, of, on, said, the.  I encourage for you to practice Rainbow Words with your child to increase their exposure and improve their word recognition. I will be informally assessing each student at the end of each week to see if they are able to read and recognize their Rainbow Words.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they made it all the way to 10 minutes and 6 seconds! Fantastic reading Grade 1! While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Keep up the great reading 1C!

SOCIAL STUDIES

This week, 1C students completed their Knuffle Bunny classroom project. The Knuffle Bunny allowed the students to explore the school and extended the story by adding where the Knuffle Bunny was going next. These sentences and drawings were added to our Knuffle Bunny classroom book.

SCIENCE

This week, we continued with our Creating Colour unit. The students reviewed the terms tint and shade. To extend their learning about colours they explored warm and cool colours and how these types of colours can effect our mood. They used this knowledge to create  beautiful watercolour paintings during art titled "Fall Leaves".
