MATH

This week the students learned how to properly form numerals. Each of the numerals had a cute little poem to help remind the students how each numeral should be formed.

0 - Around and around and around we go...when we get home we have a zero!
1 - Straight line down and then we're done. That's the way we make a one!
2 - Around and back on the railroad track. Two, two, two, two!
3 - Around a tree, around a tree. That's the way to make a three!
4 - Down and over, down once more. That's the way to make a four!
5- Straight line down and then around. Hat on top and five's a clown!
6 - Make a curve then make a loop. There are no tricks to make a six!
7 - Across the sky and down from heaven. That's the way to make a seven!
8 - Make an S and do not wait. Go back up and that's an eight!
9 - A loop and a line, that makes a nine!

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Bats in the Library by Brian Lies to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. An open library window is an invitation for a colony of bats. Once inside, older bats look for favourite books, while younger ones explore and play. Story time settles everyone down and transports them in the tales, filled with bat characters playing new roles.

BATS 1C revisited the story of Stellaluna this week. The students took part in a classroom poll of whether they thought bats were creepy or cute. Once we did a little bit more research on bats the students shared what bats can do, what bats have, and what bats are.

RAINBOW WORDS Next week, we will be working on the following Orange Words: my, of, on, said, the.  I encourage for you to practice Rainbow Words with your child to increase their exposure and improve their word recognition. I will be informally assessing each student at the end of each week to see if they are able to read and recognize their Rainbow Words.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they made it all the way to 10 minutes and 6 seconds! Fantastic reading Grade 1! While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Keep up the great reading 1C!

SOCIAL STUDIES

This week, 1C students presented their family heritage projects. It was so cool to hear about our 1C families: where their families originated, various family recipes, traditions and their ancestors. We have descendants of Napoleon Bonaparte, the first king of Germany and a relative of THE Robina Baker. WOW!

Later this week, we went on a tour around the school to find our classroom Knuffle Bunny. Sneaky little bunny disappeared! The class could not find him anywhere, turns out he hid inside my computer screen!

SCIENCE

This week we continued with our Creating Colour unit. The students reviewed their primary colours and secondary colours. They learned two new terms this week: tint and shade. A tint is when you add white to a colour, it makes the colour lighter. When you add black to colour it makes it darker. That is called a shade. I read the story "Mix It Up" by Herve Tullet to the class and the students are in the process of creating their very own Mix It Up book by experimenting with colour mixing. It got a little messy but we had so much fun!
