MATH

This week the students learned about showing, comparing and ordering numbers to 10 in a variety of different ways.

LANGUAGE ARTS

ALL ABOUT ME

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Stellaluna by Janell Cannon to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Attacked by an owl, Stellaluna (a fruit bat) is separated from her mother and taken in by a bird and her nestlings. Dutifully, she tries to accommodate--she eats insects, hangs head up, and sleeps at night, as Mama Bird says she must--but once Stellaluna learns to fly, it's a huge relief when her own mother finds her and explains that the behavior that comes naturally is appropriate to her species.

BATS 1C will be revisiting the story of Stellaluna next week as they embark on a Bats cross-curricular mini-unit. The students learned about Megabats and Microbats. Some bats eat insects and some eat fruit. Next week, we will be writing down facts about bats, as well as, taking a classroom poll about whether they believe bats are cute or creepy.

RAINBOW WORDS Next week, we will be working on the following Red Words: in, is, it, me.  I encourage for you to practice Rainbow Words with your child to increase their exposure and improve their word recognition. I will be informally assessing each student at the end of each week to see if they are able to read and recognize their Rainbow Words.

WORDS THEIR WAY The students practiced sorting their beginning consonant sounds (Vv, Yy, Zz). They can sort sounds independently and they can sort them with a friend.

DAILY 5 The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they made it all the way to 8 minutes and 16 seconds! Yahoo! While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Keep up the great reading 1C!

SOCIAL STUDIES

This week, 1C focused on belonging to a school. The students decided that being part of a classroom and/or grade shows an individual belongs to a school. School mascots and a school song also shows us that they belong to a school. I read the book Knuffle Bunny: The Case of the Mistaken Identity by Mo Willems which is about a little girl visiting her school with her Knuffle Bunny.

The students came home with a Family Project that is due on October 23rd. Please read the instructions carefully. The students should be ready to share their projects with their classmates.

SCIENCE

This week we continued on with our Creating Colour unit. The students reviewed their primary colours and secondary colours. They reviewed the acronym ROYGBIV to help them remember the colours of the rainbow. The students used their colour skills to create colour patters. Next week, we will be talking about tint and shade and the students will have a chance to play with colour mixing.
