Language Arts

I read the book, Koala Lou by Mem Fox, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around this book. When Koala  Lou's mother becomes so busy that she forgets to tell her firstborn how much she loves her, Koala Lou enters the Bush Olympics, intending to win an event and her mother's love all at one time. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the "ag, ug, eg, og" word families. They sorted words such as  fog, bog, dog, bag, rag, tag, leg, peg, beg, bug, mug, slug. The students did a guided drawing of a pug and a dog.

Math

The students have been flying through our Subtraction to 10 unit! The students can subtract within 10 using a number line and number chart. They understand and solve equations where we subtract the same number or zero. This week the students learned how to solve subtraction word problems by comparing to find many more and fewer, as well as, decomposing (breaking apart) numbers to subtract 10.
We continue to review skip counting by 5s to 100. You can practice counting by 5's from 0 to 100 at home with your child.

Science

The students finished their Building Things unit based on fairy tales. They have turned into master builders! Here are some of the things the students have built over the past two weeks:

Making Boats (with only three materials)

Wow! It floats!

Well, would you look at that!
Making Bridges
