Language Arts

I read the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around this book. This is the delightful story of one very small and very hungry caterpillar who grows into a beautiful butterfly as he nibbles his way through the pages of the book. These exquisite book helps children learn about animals, numbers, the days of the week, and the importance of friendship. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the "an, un, in" word families. They sorted words such as can, pan, man, ran, sun, fun, nun, pin, tin, bin . The students did a guided drawing of a sun, penguin, and BATMAN.

During Writer's Workshop, the students are working towards editing and publishing their Fairy Tales. They are typing up their good copies on their chromebooks.

Math

The students learned about subtraction within 10 and worked on subtraction word problems. They are using various strategies to find the difference.
We continue to review skip counting by 5s to 100. You can practice counting by 5's from 0 to 100 at home with your child.

Science

The students continue to build things based on problems presented in common fairy tales.

Social Studies

This week the students were finished up their Question (or Pourquoi) Story about an animal and their attribute (i.e. How the Dolphin Got Its Fin).
