Language Arts

I read the book, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around this book. The Lorax is an ecological warning that still rings true today amidst the dangers of clear-cutting, pollution, and disregard for the earth's environment. In the Lorax, we find what we've come to expect from the illustrious doctor: brilliantly whimsical rhymes, delightfully original creatures, and weirdly undulating illustrations. But here there is also something more-a powerful message that Seuss implores both adults and children to read.1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the "wh" "qu" "tw" and "k" blends. They sorted words such as wheel, whale, whisker, whip, tweezers, twist, twenty, twelve, quarter, question, queen, quiet, quack, kite, kitten, king. The students did a guided drawing of a king and a queen.

During Writer's Workshop, the students continued with the unit, Fairy Tale and Realistic Fiction Writing. This week, the students stretching out their character's actions. They worked with partners to add details to make their writing more fun for their friends to read. I can't wait to read the finished products!

Math

The students learned about the relationship between addition and subtraction. They learned that addition is a "part+part=whole" and subtraction is "whole-part=part". Next week, we begin to explore with various subtraction strategies.

Science

This week, the students continued to build things based on problems presented in common fairy tales. The students were paired up and had the task of building a sturdy chair for a stuffy/toy. They later illustrated their designs in their workbooks. Some of the students were quite creative in their design process.

Social Studies

The focus this week was Earth Day. The students were introduced to terms like: reduce, re-use, recycle. As a class, we discussed ways we can keep the Earth clean. The students set up their own goals of how they will help the Earth.

Have an amazing weekend!
