Language Arts

I read the book, Dr. DeSoto by William Steig, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  Doctor DeSoto, the mouse dentist, is very good at his work. He treats small animals in his normal dentist's chair, and bigger animals by climbing on a ladder. But he and his assistant (his wife) are very careful not to let in animals that eat mice. One day, a forlorn-looking fox with a terrible toothache convinces them he needs treatment. They take pity on him, but once Doctor DeSoto has pulled out the bad tooth, the fox feels a little too much like his old self! So before he returns, the DeSotos come up with a plan that lets Doctor DeSoto finish the job without getting eaten. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.
Throughout the week, the students reviewed the digraphs "ch" "sh" "th" and "wh" with picture sorts. Next weeek we will begin to play with blends.

Daily 5 Rotations are under way and the students did a marvelous job moving through the centers on Wednesday. They have really worked hard since September to build their stamina and they are able to maintain focus in each center for 15 minutes, way to go!

Math

This week, the students reviewed odd and even numbers with various books, activities and games.

With their knowledge of even numbers we started to count by 2's to 20. You can practice counting by 2's from 0 to 20 at home with your child.  We will be starting our addition unit on Monday.

Science

The class learned about new vocabulary for our Senses unit. Words like size, taste, colour, smell, lustre, shape, wetness, texture, temperature and pitch. We sorted the vocabulary based on which "sense" they belong to (sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch).

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C discussed Helping Each Other. The students completed an obstacle course in the classroom. At the end, the class talked about what they think would happen if they had to do the course while blindfolded by themselves. Would it be harder or easier? Then we talked about why it's important to help out at home, at school, and in the community. Next week, we will work on working through the steps of decision making.

Enjoy the long weekend!
