Language Arts

I read the book, The Hat by Jan Brett, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  This book is a clever and appealing picture book. In preparation for cold weather, Lisa takes her winter clothes out of their storage chest and hanges them up in the fresh air. A strong wind blows one of her knit socks off the line. A hedgehog sticks his head inside, and it becomes stuck on his quills. When a hen, goose, cat, dog, pig, horse laugh at his appearance, he tries to salvage his dignity by telling each one that his new hat will keep him dry, warm, and cozy throughout the winter. When Lisa goes back to the clothesline, she sees all the animals wearing her clothes on their heads! 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the "-sh" digraph with words like ship, shirt, shark, shed, shop, shell, sheep. The class did a guided drawing of a shark, super scary!

This week, during Writer's Workshop, we focused on the book The Biggest Snowman Ever by Steven Kroll. This story inspired the students to write a "How To Build a Snowman" piece. They worked on their rough copies this morning and will complete their good copies next week. Can't wait to see how they all turn out!

Math

In Math this week, students learned number words up to 20. I challenged them with a couple of warm up activities that required the students to put the number words in the correct order from eleven to twenty. They were pretty good at it by the end of the week, good job Grade 1's! The students continue to work on a number 1-20 practice booklet to demonstrate their numeral writing skills and showing a numeral in multiple ways.

Science

The class is learning new topics in their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, the students focused on the season of winter. As a class, we went outside to explore the Five Senses of Winter. The students had a chance to listen to the sounds of winter, 'feel' winter, see winter around them, and explore what winter might smell like. Thanks to the warm weather we were able to make snowmen!

Snow Slide!

The students continue to use Explore Tubs when they have completed their work and made sure to do their best work. Each tub focuses on a different topic in our Seasonal Changes unit, for instance, animal behaviors in certain seasons, cloud formation, dressing for the weather, extreme weather, and shadows.

We also discussed the various ways animals prepare for winter, such as, hibernation, adaptations, and migrations. The book "Over and Under the Snow" had excellent examples. Later in the week, the students partnered up and recited a play about a chipmunk and a squirrel and their plans for the winter. 1C had a chance to practice their strong presenter voice, so adorable!

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C learned about Rights and Responsibilities. They discussed and gave examples about their responsibility at home and at school. Since the concept of Rights is a little difficult for young children to comprehend I read an amzing book called For Every Child which is written by UNICEF. It does an excellent job explaining all of the rights of the child in words and pictures.

Visit From the Dental Hygienist

Thank you to Dr. Khaled A. Sharaf from Horizon Orthodontics for sending Tennille, a dental hygienist, to speak to our Grade 1's about how to keep our teeth clean and healthy.

Have an awesome weekend!
