Language Arts

I read the book, Snow Day!,  to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  This book is a story of a "wishful thinking" day about a family who tells us how they would spend their day off IF it was a snow day...sipping hot chocolate from snowmen mugs and sledding in the neighbour's field...only to realize a surprising teacher twist at the end! 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the -ig -ip and -ill word families with words like pig, dig, zip, lip, hill, pill, mill. The class did a guided drawing of a pig, so cute!

This week we focused on the book "The Mitten by Jan Brett". This story challenged the Grade 1's with sequencing and story re-telling. At the end of the week, during Writer's Workshop, the students wrote about their very own character to add into the mitten. The students did a fantastic job creating original and creative ideas!

Math

In Math this week, students learned to count backwards from 20 and how to compare numbers up to 20. They reviewed the symbols < > and = and what they represent. The students continue to work on a number 1-20 practice booklet to demonstrate their numeral writing skills and showing a numeral in multiple ways.

Science

The class is learning new topics in their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, the students focused on the season of winter. As a class, we discussed what winter is, what winter feels like, what sort of colours represent winter, and special words that describe winter.
The students continue to use Explore Tubs when they have completed their work and made sure to do their best work. Each tub focuses on a different topic in our Seasonal Changes unit, for instance, animal behaviours in certain seasons, cloud formation, dressing for the weather, extreme weather, and shadows.

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C learned about symbols. Symbols are pictures that represent something. Everyone knows what they mean. For instance, Superman logo, the bat signal for Batman, a peace sign, a stop sign, the Canadian flag, etc..
In addition to symbols we talked about the country of Canada. The students can state that Canada has two official languages (English and French), describe our national flag, sing our national anthem, and list some national symbols of Canada.

Artist Study: Vincent van Gogh

1C's beginning stages of a reproduction of van Gogh's "Starry Night"...

Some pictures from the week before Winter Break:

Our Elf on the Shelf up to no good again!
The Gingerbread Man was on the loose and tied up our Elf in toilet paper after she tried to stop him! How rude!

Twinkle was ready for the Gingerbread Man this time!
