Week 15

Classroom Updates

Meet our Classroom Elf.....TWINKLE

Twinkle was caught zip lining in our classroom!

She fell into a pile of snow and had to take a marshmallow bath!

Twinkle tried to put a puzzle together!

Congratulations to our
 Student of the Week!

Phew! Our Friday was busy but we had a fantastic time painting a Christmas mural with Mrs. Potter's Grade 4 class!

Language Arts

I read the book, The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  In this book, Santa has asked Teeka to get the reindeer ready for Christmas Eve, only this means rounding them up from the wild Arctic tundra and teaching them what to do. Her bossy ways only gets their antlers in a tangly mess and she realizes that she must train them a different way. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child!
Throughout the week, the students explored the -ug -ut and -un word families with words like hut, cut, nut, bug, hug, rug, tug, sun, bun. The class did a guided drawing of a bug (a grasshopper)!

As a class, we continue to build stamina in Reading to Someone. This week, the students of 1C read to the Kinders in Mrs.Water's class. The Grade 1's are becoming quite confident readers.
During Writing Workshop this week, the students imagined that they were elves. They also received their own elf name. Some of the names were pretty silly!

Math

In Math this week, students learned a new math term: estimate. Throughout the week, 1C knows that when they don't know the exact number, they make a guess that is close to it (an estimate). The students were pretty successful at making close guesses. They also continued to work on a number 1-20 practice booklet to demonstrate their numeral writing skills and showing a numeral in multiple ways.

Science

The class is learning new topics in their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, the students can describe how people prepare for seasonal changes. Examples include air conditioner, warmer clothes, raking leaves, or putting on winter tires.
The students continue to use Explore Tubs when they have completed their work and made sure to do their best work. Each tub focuses on a different topic in our Seasonal Changes unit, for instance, cloud formation, dressing for the weather, extreme weather, and shadows.
1C has also completed their owl unit. They have done some great work and can tell me a lot of information about owls. I sent home an owl reader that you can read with your child.

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C hopped on the Polar Express and made stops in Hawaii, Mexico, and South Africa. The students learned how to say 'Merry Christmas' in three different languages.
"Mele Kalikimaka" (in Hawaiian)
"Feliz Navidad" (in Spanish)
Geseende Kersfees (in Afrikaans)
For each of these countries they carried out certain activities. For Hawaii, they enjoyed making flower leis. For Mexico, they painted beautiful poinsettias with sponges. For South Africa, I brought in Christmas crackers and we had a blast cracking them at the end of the day on Friday! Next week we hop back on the train and head to Germany, Sweden, Holland, England, Australia and to the North Pole!

Enjoy Your Weekend...1 more week until Christmas break!
