Language Arts

I read the book, Wolf! by Becky Bloom to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book. It is a story about a wolf who is stunned to find other animals reading in the farmyard. The other animals are not amused by his lack of seriousness for reading and send him off to get "educated". When he returns they help him refine his reading skills, his fluency and his passion for books and learning. 1C created a Story Map for the book, they focused on the title, the author, characters, setting and the problem.
1C is doing quite well identifying the initial, ending and medial sounds during the listening games associated to this book. Their new challenge is Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child!

This week in Writer's Workshop, 1C learned how to write questions. They learned the 'Question Words" that most questions begin with: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW. All questions need an ending punctuation, the questions mark (?). The students put this new information to work when they wrote a couple of questions regarding owls. They came up with some great questions, for instance, "How do owls fly?" or "How do owls sit on a branch?". Their guided drawings of an owl turned out amazing!

Throughout the week, the students explored the -ap and -ag word families with words like bag, tag, flag, lap, cap, map, nap. The class did a guided drawing of the Canadian flag!
We will be focusing on building stamina Reading to Someone and Listen to Reading this upcoming month.

Math

Throughout the week, 1C were challenged to count to 20 using a number chart and a number line and completed various activities surrounding this skill.

Science

The class is learning new topics in their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, we discussed how as the sun moves across the sky, you can sequence events that occur throughout the day using a timeline. 1C filled out a timeline in their Science Journals. The students also explored the concept of Light and Shadow with their favorite stuffy and a flashlight (acting as the Sun). Oops! I forgot to snap some pictures! They documented their findings in their Science Journals and noticed that in the morning and evening when the sun is closer to the ground the shadow of an object is long and when the sun is right above the object there is barely any shadow, more like an outline. 1C learned some difficult science terms this week: opaque, translucent and transparent.
The students continue to use Explore Tubs when they have completed their work and made sure to do their best work. Each tub focuses on a different topic in our Seasonal Changes unit, for instance, cloud formation, dressing for the weather, extreme weather, and shadows.

Social Studies

The students are creating a "Me on a Map" project which will illustrates how they belong to a town, province, country, continent, and planet. The flip books will be showcased in the classroom when completed.
In addition, we have been talking about Whole-Body Listening in class. The students created their very own listening ears like their friend Howard B. Wigglebottom who also learned how to be a good listener.

Enjoy Your Weekend!
