Week 11

Housekeeping

A big thank you to Susanna for carrying the Remembrance Day wreath during the Remembrance Day ceremony last week. The 1Cs and the 1Ds were in charge of decorating the wreath for the ceremony. The whole school did an excellent job showing their respect during the ceremony. The students demonstrated their best whole-body listening. All of the teachers were really proud of their students.

Congratulations to our Student of the Week! 1C is proud of you.

Reminders:
  • December Book Order is due December 9th
  • Encourage your child to read their home reading book (R.E.D. folder) at least once a week.
  • Please review your Rainbow Words at home!
  • Brrr...it is getting colder! Please dress your child accordingly.

Language Arts

I read the book, Where the Wild Things Are by to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book. It is a story about a little boy named Max who misbehaves and is sent to his room by his mother (I'm sure all of the students could relate to this 😉), without his supper. While Max is alone in his room, his imagination takes him faraway to a land where the wild things live. Max tames these creatures but soon grows tired of being in the land of the wild things and longs to return home "where someones lived him best of all". At the end of the story, Max finds himself back in his own bedroom, where his supper is waiting for him.
1C worked really hard on the initial and ending sound activities. They loved the challenge in finding the medial sound! 1C created a Story Map for the book, they focused mainly on the title, the author, characters, setting and the problem.

This week in Writer's Workshop, 1C reviewed how to write Simple Sentences. All simple sentences need an ending punctuation (. ? !), spaces in between words, interesting words (i.e. "disgusting" or "potion"), a capital letter at the beginning, make sense, and have one thought.
Throughout the week, the students explored the -an and -ad word families with words like man, can, pan, fan, dad, pad, mad, sad. The class did a guided drawing of a a special kind of man, Spider-Man! They wrote some awesome sentences about Spider-Man! **If you would like to try some guided drawings at home, please visit Art Hub on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/ArtforKidsHub). It is a fantastic resource!**
Also, our class was lucky enough to read with the Kinders on Wednesday. They did an amazing job reading to their younger friends. We will definitely do it again!

Math

Throughout the week, 1C worked on counting to 20, matching numerals to the appropriate amount, and ordering numbers to 20. The students practiced their math skills on Mathletics towards the end of the week.
This Thursday, we reached our 50th day of school! Wow! The students were very excited to have Zero the Hero visit them that day.

Science

The class is learning new topics in their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, the students learned that the Sun is a giant star in our solar system. They were shocked to find out that the Sun is so big that it could fit  one million Earths inside of it! 1C was very good in naming what the Sun's two main jobs were: heat and light. Later in the week, the class shared some activities that they do specifically during the day and/or night. They were responsible for carrying out a "Day and Night" sorting activity in their Science Journals.
The students of 1C were introduced to Explore Tubs. When students completed their work in Science and made sure to do their best work they have access to these tubs. Each tub focuses on a different topic in our Seasonal Changes unit, for instance, cloud formation, dressing for the weather, extreme weather, and shadows.

Social Studies

In the week leading up to Remembrance Day, the students read a book called, "What does PEACE feel like?". The students came up with such insightful and thoughtful responses during the reading that we decided to create a classroom book. We are almost done and hopefully it will be displayed in the classroom sometime this week!

This week, with the help of Google Maps, the students were able to locate our school on the map of Devon. Next, the class learned that they live in the province of Alberta. In their Social Studies Journal they received a map of Alberta and had to locate Devon on the map based on what they observed on Google Maps. Next week, the students will be creating a "Me on a Map" which will illustrate how they belong to a town, province, country, continent, and planet.

Enjoy Your Weekend!
