LANGUAGE ARTS
RAINBOW WORDS The students learned new Pink Rainbow Words: put, there, very, when, your, am, as, away, by cat. The students will be assessed at the end of each week. Regular review of these high frequency words is highly recommended.



















WORDS THEIR WAY The last two weeks, the students have been learning about the "S Blends". Last week, our focus was words that begin with ST such as stamp, stump, star, steam. This week, our focus was words that begin with SK, SP, and SM such as skip, skate, spear, spider, smile, smock.
LISTENING GAMES I read the book Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson to 1C last week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book last week. Fletcher the fox is extremely excited to greet the spring and all it has to offer: warm breezes, brightly colored flowers, and animals waking up. When Fletcher finds the ground covered in white, he rushes to warn the other animals that spring snow has fallen, but when they follow him back to the meadow they find something much more fun.
I read the book Everything Spring by Jill Esbaum to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. These pages burst with vibrant photographs of baby animals and close-ups of buds and growth. Esbaum uses poetic prose to connect children with the joy of the season: "Spring tiptoes in, /stirring up earthy/smells, coaxing/color from the/winter brown woods." Students will recognize themselves in the eager, tentative duckling taking to water.A climax of an oncoming storm sends animals scrambling for shelter.
WRITING This week, I read the story Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Litchenheld. 1C had a lot of fun deciding whether the image was a duck or a rabbit. As you can see most of the students thought it looked like a rabbit. 
The students were introduced to the Opinion writing style. They had to provide me with reasons of why they believed it was a rabbit or duck. They had some really good reasons!



MATH
1C learned how to count by 2s to 20. Try practicing counting by 2s with objects you can find around the house, ie. cereal or legos!
The students learned a few tricks to remember their doubles facts (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6). They loved begin able to make their own little chart in their Math Journals. (Doubles Video)
The class' goal for the last two weeks is to recognize and know the different combinations in making 10. They learned a fun new game called 10s pyramid with a deck of cards. It is a great way to practice facts to 10, such as 0+10 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5. (What Makes 10 Video)
Lastly, the students learned how to use the "Flip Flop" strategy (commutative property) to assist them when solving addition sentences. They recognized that 2+3 gives us the same sum as 3+2.
                                               
On Wednesday, 1C had a blast playing multiple math games with 1D!
Next week, the students will finish up their Addition to 10 unit by looking at the relationship between addition and subtraction.
SCIENCE
Last week, the Grade 1s ended our Senses unit by completing stations for each "sense". They had a blast!
This week, students started to explore the season of Spring. I read the book When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes.

SOCIAL STUDIES
The students created a Snapshot of Devon. They picked three of their favourite places in Devon and drew three pictures that they tried to make look realistic photographs.

                                       
Meet our community helper, Firefighter Ray! He came by to talk about his job and how he helps his community. The students learned about the dangers of firefighting and all the steps that need to be taken in order for EVERYBODY to stay safe in a fire emergency. He challenged the students to create a fire plan for their family and make sure they know what to do in case of a fire. 
Now time for some fun! Ms. Starostecki was timed to see how fast she could put on the gear. The students were laughing at their teacher as she had a hard time walking in those heavy boots! One lucky classmate was chosen to put on the firefighter's gear. Thank you Ray for visiting with 1C and bringing us our very own hats and activity book!
