LANGUAGE ARTS

RAINBOW WORDS The students learned five Blue Rainbow Words: her, here, his, into, just. The students will be assessed at the end of each week. Regular review of these high frequency words is highly recommended.
Our favourite sight word game SPLAT!

WORDS THEIR WAY This week, the students reviewed and sorted digraphs TH and WH. They provided me with words that contain the digraphs th and wh. 1C drew a picture of a whale and wrote a short sentence about it, highlighting the word whale.
READING While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flip the Dolphin strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know. Flip the Dolphin flip the vowel sound, try the long and short vowel sounds.
MATH
This week in 1C, students began the unit Addition to 10! They started off with basic facts to 5 and adding to 10. Every addition equation to 10 can be solved using different strategies such as coutning on fingers, drawing pictures, using small objects and mental math. The students played a few addition games to practice using their new learned skills.

SCIENCE
The students reviewed the parts of the ear and how they contribute to the sense of hearing. 1C was amazed to find out there are little bones inside of the ear and the role of the eardrum. In an activity, I asked the students to close their eyes and focus on the sounds they hear around them. It is amazing what we can hear once we take away one of our senses!
