Week 8
MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...
COLOUR WHEEL PROJECT
Next week, we will be exploring primary and secondary colours. The class will be creating a classroom collaborative colour wheel. Please bring in an item for each of the colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). You can see what our collaborative project will look like below. The items do not need to be purchased and can be easily found at home:
- recycled materials
- craft items (pom poms, stickers, foam, etc.)
- packaging from food
- newspapers
- magazines
Robina Baker Elementary School is collecting socks for Youth Empowerment Support Services for the month of October. The socks need to be brand new (no used ones). Thank you, in advance, for your participation.

LANGUAGE ARTS
LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Deep in the woods in an old white cabin, three friends make their pumpkin soup the same way every day. The Cat slices up the pumpkin, the Squirrel stirs in the water, and the Duck tips in just enough salt. But one day the Duck wants to stir instead, and then there is a horrible squabble, and he leaves the cabin in a huff. It isn't long before the Cat and the Squirrel start to worry about him and begin a search for their friend.
READING The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they read up to 9 minutes! Woohoo! While they reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast.
RAINBOW WORDS 1C worked on the Red Rainbow Words: me, in, is, it. Next week, we will begin on the Orange Rainbow Words (my, of, on, said, the).
WRITING I read the book Room on the Broom by Julia Davidson. The students re-told the story using sequencing cards and helped me create a story map for the book. They had to listen to a poem and colour a picture by listening closely to the colour words and instructions.

MATH
This week, students created their very own patterns by drawing and by sharing an action pattern. 1C practiced identifying and labelling the pattern core on numerous types of patterns. Towards the end of the week, the students learned how to create repeating patterns using different elements (i.e. colours and shape, or size and shape).
SCIENCE
This week, the Grade 1s reviewed the three primary colours: red, yellow, blue. They learned that by mixing two primary colours together they can create new colours (secondary colours). The students went on a colour hunt around the classroom to find 6 animals that were various primary and secondary colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). Once they found the animals, they had to determine whether they were primary or secondary colour.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
