Week 6

MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...

I am proud to be leading the second year of the BOKS program at RBES! As a BOKS trainer, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this (free!) program. By the end of a program session, I have watched students become more confident, stronger and adopt a health-conscious mindset. The program aims to get elementary school aged children moving in the morning to help ready their brains for a day of focused learning. BOKS was founded on the principal that ACTIVE KIDS = ACTIVE MINDS. Research has show that exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains. Click on the link to watch a quick video about what the BOKS program is all about! I encourage you to learn more about the BOKS program at www.bokskids.ca. Mrs. Kloschinsky will be sending out an email with further information and a registration link by the end of the weekend. You have until October 30th to register your child and the BOKS program will begin on November 6th.

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Seeds, Sprouts, Pumpkin, Pie by Jill Esbaum to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were centered around the book this week. Celebrate the flavour of fall on every page of this beautifully photographed picture book. Follow along as National Geographic takes you from seed to sprout, pumpkin to pie. Envelope your class in the season by reading and learning all about pumpkins. The story begins with the growth of the seed into a pumpkin plant. The pictures capture the various stages of the pumpkin's development from seed to pumpkin and the different stages in-between. This book is part of National Geographic's "Picture the Seasons" series. It makes a nice addition to an autumn unit of study.

READING The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they read up to 7 minutes! Way to go! While they reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast.
RAINBOW WORDS 1C has been reviewed their first set of Red Rainbow Wordsa, all, and, are, at.

PRINTING This week the students practiced and refined their goofy letters (o, u, f, e, s). I sent home a printing practice sheet for those letters and please return by Monday. The sheet provides some instructions and tips on how to refine your child's printing.

MATH

The students learned how to sort items using different attributes. They also used a Venn diagram to sort items.

SCIENCE

This week, the Grade 1s started the Creating Colour unit. I read the book, The Crayon Box That Talked by Shane DeRolf. They discussed how being unique makes the world an exciting, beautiful place! The students coloured in their very own set of crayons that will be displayed in our 1C Crayon Box.

SOCIAL STUDIES

1C shared ways they belong to various groups: school, family, community, etc.
