Week 5

MESSAGE FROM MS.STAROSTECKI

Your child's Home Reading Folder and Rainbow Words ring have been sent home. I strongly encourage your child to read a book every day. Home reading books AND library books will be exchanged every Wednesday. Please read the information sheet I have provided inside the folder it contains tips and comprehension questions that will help you support your child's reading. As for Rainbow Words, although I encourage practicing these words at home every night I do not want your child to become frustrated. If your child cannot seem to memorize a word move onto the next one, talk about the letter sounds, and/or make it into a search and find game in their favourite book ("Can you find the word all on this page?"). We will begin with the RED words for the next couple of weeks. I only introduce five words at a time. Our first set of words are: a, all, and, are, at.
If you have any further questions and/or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

On another note, autumn weather is upon us and I just want to send out a little reminder to dress your child accordingly. A number of our little ones had to be sent to borrow warmer items (i.e. mitts or sweaters) from the office because they were cold at recess time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

LANGUAGE ARTS

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Giving Thanks by Jonathan London to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were centered around the book this week. This story is not an Indian legend, but based on the real message of the Iroquois Indian nation to Mother Earth as a Thanksgiving address. Written in child-friendly language, these words of gratitude are still spoken at ceremonial events in the northwest region of the United States today.

READING The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they While they reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye and the Lips the Fish strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word.

RAINBOW WORDS 1C has been introduced to their first set of Red Rainbow Words: a, all, and, are, at. They learned a new sight word game called Splat!

PRINTING This week the students practiced and refined their mountain letters (v, w, y, x, z). I sent home a printing practice sheet for those letters and please return by Monday. The sheet provides some instructions and tips on how to refine your child's printing.

ALL ABOUT ME I loved learning about all of my new students. What a great way to get to know one another!

MATH

To end the week, I read the book Perfect Square. The students created beautiful art work by manipulating and shaping square shaped pieces of paper into landscapes.

SCIENCE

This week we finished up talking about the season of Fall. The students provided examples of Fall Activities and an acrostic poem about FALL. Next week, we begin our exploration of colours. The students also finished their Leaf Man project.

SOCIAL STUDIES

1C students were very excited to share things that they are thankful for, in the spirit of Thanksgiving. I read the book The Thankful Book by Todd Parr to the class. We used this book as an inspiration to create our Thankful Turkeys.
