Welcome to 1C

A Message from Ms. Starostecki...

The Grade 1's have experienced their first full (almost!) week. The students are starting to find their way around the classroom as they practice their daily routines. They are starting to understand that they serve an important role in the classroom. All of our families should be super proud of their first grader because they are kind, helpful, and brighten up our classroom in their own special way.

Language Arts

I sent "All About Me" Bags home with some students this week. I will continue to do so at the end of each week. If your child has an All About Me bag, please follow the instructions, and return the bag after the weekend. We will use these bags to learn more about our classmates, learn about asking/answering questions, and participate in shared writing.

Next week, the students will begin Printing practice. They will begin with half-moon letters (c, a, d, g, q). I will be sending an information sheet along with a practice page. The practice page is an intregal part in developing your child's printing skills and fine-motor control. The practice pages must be completed and returned by the end of the week (Thursday, September 13th).

This week was focused on learning about the letters in their names. We read Chrysanthemum and the students created a flower using the petals for each letter in their names. Once this was completed, they counted how many letters they had in their first names.

On Wednesday, I read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to the class. The students of 1C searched through the scrambled up letters to find each letter that belonged to their first name and glued those letters to the top of the coconut tree.

1C students learned that they can read a book in three ways: read the pictures, read the words, retell the story. Next week we will begin to build our Read to Self Stamina.

Math

The Grade 1s started on their Shapes unit, the students began their week by reviewing the 2D Shapes. They created 2D shapes using linking cubes.
