Week 37
MESSAGE FROM MS.STAROSTECKI
Please return R.E.D. Folders and Rainbow Word Rings on Monday, June 11th.
1C Free Swim Days are June 25 to June 27th from 10:20am to 11:00am. The permission form can be completed on Powerschool. The lifeguards would like a ratio of 1:3 for students 6 and under and 1:6 for the rest. So I will be needing about five parent volunteers to be in the water with out class. If we do not have enough volunteers I will have to cancel with Swim Day. Please let me know if you are able to help out!
With the warmer weather, I strongly urge parents to send their kids to school with a hat and water bottle. Also, with those nasty mosquitos buzzing around you can send some bug spray with your child. We want our kiddos to be sun safe and bug bite free.

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Deusen to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were focused around the book this week. Come along wth Mr. Magee and his spotted dog, Dee, and they head to the mountains for a few days of rest and relaxation until a bear decides to reek havoc on their campsite and unhitch their camper. Their real adventure begins when head for the rapids and down the falls.WORDS THEIR WAY Throughout the week, the students reviewed the reviewed the -ag, -og, -ig, -eg word families with words such as tag, bag, fog, log, fig, big, peg, leg. The students drew a picture of a pig.
WRITING The students finished up their fairytales with the help of Ms. Potter's class. 1C had so much fun learning how to change fonts, backgrounds, and adding images to go along with their fairytale. 1C also started off their Poetry unit by writing a shape poem about Rain.
While they reading the students are practicing the Tryin' Lion, Skippy Frog, Flip the Dolphin, Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish strategy.
Tryin' Lion Try it again! Re-read the sentence. Try a word that looks and sounds right.
Skippy Frog who skips the word. Reads to the end of the sentence. Hops back and re- reads the sentence.
Flip the Dolphin tries the short vowel. If it doesn't sound right, flip the sound to the long vowel and try it again. Skippy Frog who skips the word. Reads to the end of the sentence. Hops back and re- reads the sentence.
Chunky Monkey looks for hunks and chunks they know inside a word.
Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast.
Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book.

1C learned about the term length. They sorted objects shortest to longest. The students measured the length of the classroom too! It took 468 linking cubes from one side of the classroom to the next, wow!
SCIENCE
This week, we discussed the needs of living things. Plants need sun, soil, air and water. Animals and humans need air, water, food and shelter.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The students finished presenting their Grandparent Interview project. I loved hearing about all of the facts and questions the students asked their grandparents. They learned a lot!
