Language Arts

I read the book, Swimmy by , to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around this book.  Deep in the sea there lives a happy school of little fish. Their watery world is full of wonders, but there is also danger, and the little fish are afraid to come out of hiding...until Swimmy comes along. Swimmy shows his friends how - with ingenuity and teamwork-they can overcome any danger. With its graceful text and stunning artwork, this Caldecott Honor Book deserves a place on every classroom's shelf. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the "ack, ick, ock, uck" word families. They sorted words such as  back, tack, sick, pick, sock, rock, duck, stuck. The students did a guided drawing of a duck.

For Writer's Workshop this week, we read the silly story "The Watermelon Seed".
The students wrote about what would happen if they had their favourite fruit/vegetable's seed growing inside their bodies. Our Grade 1s had some pretty funny insights. Mrs. Mruk and I had a good laugh at some of their creative ideas.

Math

The students have completed the Subtraction to 10 unit! This week we focused on fluently subtracting within 10. The students understand and determine if an equation is equal. Also, the students understand that subtraction and addition have inverse relationships. They used subtraction to find the unknown addend.

We continue to review skip counting by 5s to 100. You can practice counting by 5's from 0 to 100 at home with your child.

Science

This week, the students explored the topic of Plants. On Monday, they created their very own Greenhouse. They will be observing any changes to their seeds for the next few days. We discussed plant needs, uses and parts. The students shared different types of plants that human's eat. They gave examples for each of these types of plants that we eat:  roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruit. As a class, we also looked at the life cycle of a plant and used various descriptors to describe a plant. You can say that 1C are plant experts now!

Social Studies

In relation to our Needs of Plants and Animals unit, the Grade 1's talked about a landmark that is familiar to most kids...the Zoo! We reviewed what a landmark is and drew a sketch of out very own zoo. Pretty cool!
This upcoming Monday, students will receive a Family Homework Project to complete at home. Details will be provided on an information sheet. The project must be completed by June 12. Students will present their project to the class on June 12. Thank you, in advance, for your participation!
