Language Arts
I read the book, Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around this book. Thunder Cake is a touching story based on the relationship between Patricia Polacco and her Grandmother. Patricia loves spending her summer days at her Grandma's farm in Michigan, but she is scared of thunderstorms. Patricia's Grandma helps her overcome her fear of thunder by distracting her during a storm by baking a Thunder Cake. 1C continues to work on Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.
Throughout the week, the students explored the "ell, ill, all" word families. They sorted words such as bell, fell, well, pill, will, spill, stall, fall, ball. The students did a guided drawing of a Tinkerbell.

Math
The students have been flying through our Subtraction to 10 unit! The students can decompose (break apart) numbers to subtract within 10. They are working towards fluently subtracting within 10. Also, they can understand and determine if an equation is equal.
We continue to review skip counting by 5s to 100. You can practice counting by 5's from 0 to 100 at home with your child.

Science
The students began their Needs of Plants and Animals unit. The students can determine if an object is living or non-living. They discussed what makes an object living and shared that it has to grow, move, needs air, needs food, needs water, and sometimes a living thing has babies. The students can now name the basic needs of plants, animals, and people. Lastly, the students labelled the parts of the flower (roots, stem, leaves, flower).
