Language Arts

I read the book, The Edible Pyramid by Loreen Leedy, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book. "In a restaurant shaped like a pyramid, the elegant feline waiter shows customers the delicious foods available. Each section of the USDA Food Guide Pyramid is explored, with vivid illustrations of grain, fruit, vegetables, meats, nuts and other goodies." 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students worked with the "pl" blend by completing picture sorts. They worked with words such as plane, plate, plus, plant, plug.

During Writer's Workshop, the students continue to improve on their opinion writing. This week they have been working on adding more reasons, creating strong introductions and strong conclusions. They are currently working on a special writing piece that they will present during Student Led Conferences.

Math

We continue to review skip counting by 2's to 20. You can practice counting by 2's from 0 to 20 at home with your child.
This week, the students worked on addition word problems with two addends.
The class is constantly reviewing the terms: addition, equation, symbols, and sum.

Science

This week, the students learned about the sense of taste.  First, we discussed the four taste buds (sweet, salty, sour, bitter) and where they are located on the tongue. Later on in the week, we conducted a 'taste' experiment. The students tasted 6 different food items and decided on whether they were sweet, salty, sour or bitter and shared their opinion on whether they liked it or not. All of the students liked the cracker but most of them hated the dark chocolate. Their faces really showed how they felt about certain food items.

She was not a fan of dark chocolate.
The lemon is too sour!

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C learned about Landmarks The students provided me with examples of landmarks in Devon. Currently, they are completing a project called "My Devon".

Art

The class started a new artist study last week, the Canadian artist Ted Harrison.

Have an awesome weekend!
