  • Please make sure your child is reading their home reading book, record and send back to school each Monday. Any additional books that your child reads may be recorded in their R.E.D. folder reading log. 
  • I cannot stress the importance of practicing the Rainbow Words with your child every day. Read about the benefits here : http://www.k12reader.com/six-benefits-of-teaching-sight-words/ Students are assessed every Monday.
  • 1C has library time on Thursdays. Please bring your library books in by Thursdays so that your child can take out a new library book.

Language Arts

I read the book, Jake's 100th Day of School by Lester Laminack, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  Jake and his fellow students are getting ready for a celebration. Tomorrow is the 100th day of school and everyone is going to share their collections of 100 things. The day of the celebration arrives. Jake's friend Henry brings 100 bottle caps and Emily brings 100 paper clips. But Jake forgetrs the 100 family pictures he has glued into a special memory book at home. Disaster! The problem is solved thanks to Jake's ingenuity and the sensitivity of his wonderful principal, Mrs.Wadsworth. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Add /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

 Throughout the week, the students worked with the "st" blend by completing picture sorts. The students did a guided drawing of a starfish. Patrick the Starfish!



This week we started our Opinion writing unit. We read the book "The Best Part of Me" by Wendy Ewald. It is a book written by children about what their favourite body part is and why. Take a look at what a couple of students came up with:





















Math

We will continue to review skip counting by 2's to 20. You can practice counting by 2's from 0 to 20 at home with your child.
To start off our addition unit the students practiced basic addition to 5. They learned how to add within 5 using different strategies to add (fingers, pictures, and small objects). New terms include: addition, equation, symbols, and sum.

Science 

This week, the students matched the 5 senses to the correct body part.  They used their knowledge about senses to sort and classify picture cards by which sense is used the most with each object

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C learned about decision making. The students were paired up and presented with a problem. For each problem they had to brainstorm three solutions. Together, they would decide the best choice. I was blown away by their responses and decision making skills, way to go Grade 1's!

MESSAGE FROM MS.STAROSTECKI With the warmer weather, I strongly urge parents to send their kids to school with a hat and a water bottle. Also, with those nasty mosquitos buzzing around you can send some bug spray with your child. We want our kiddos to be sun safe and bug bite free! REMINDERS NO SCHOOL (VICTORIA DAY)   on May 21st. Language Arts The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Lips the Fish strategy. Lips the Fish gets their lips ready for the beginning and ending sounds. As a whole group, we have been reading "It's Back to School We Go" by Ellen Jackson which illustrates and follows the daily life of a student in a variety of different countries such as Kenya, Russia, and the United States. In Printing, the students practiced and refined their "half moon letters": c,d,g, and q. I will continue to send home "All About Me" bags with some students each week. If your child has an All About Me bag, please follow the instructions, and return the bag after the weekend. We will use these bags to learn more about our classmates, learn about asking/answering questions, and participate in shared writing. Housekeeping The Grade 1's did an amazing job at the Christmas Concert! It was a long week for them but they pulled through! Here are some pictures of 1C the night of the concert:   Congratulations to our Student of the Week ! Reminders: Author Visit for the Grade 1s & 2s on Tuesday, December 13th. Our Winter Seasonal Walk is scheduled for Thursday, December 22nd from 1-3pm (weather permitting).  PJ & Stuffie Movie Day is on Friday December 23rd. Language Arts I read the book,  Too Many Toys!  by  David Shannon  to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  The book is about a boy named Spencer who has too many toys. His mom falls over them, his dad trips over them, there are toys absolutely everywheere in the house. His mom and dad say it is time to give some of them away.
