Language Arts

I read the book, Jennifer Jones Won't Leave Me Alone by Frieda Wishinsky, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book.  This sweet "love" story is about a boy who is admired and adored by a fellow classmate who has a crush on him and tells him and shows him in every way, every day how much she loves him. He can't stand it and wishes for her to move, until one day he finds out that Jennifer's mom got transferred and now she is moving. After she is gone, he wants her back. 1C continues to work on  Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.

Throughout the week, the students explored the "th" and "wh" digraph with words like thumb, thimble, thermometer, thermos, thorn, think, whisk, wheat, whale, whip, whistle, wheelbarrow, wheel. The class did a guided drawing of a whale, great work class!

Daily 5 Rotations are under way and the students did a marvelous job moving through the centers on Wednesday. They have really worked hard since September to build their stamina and they are able to maintain focus in each center for 15 minutes, way to go!

This week, during Writer's Workshop, we finished up creating our good copy for writing our "How To Build a Snowman" piece.

Math

This week, the students learned about odd numbers and even numbers. They were introduced to Even Steven and Odd Todd to help them remember which numbers are odd and which ones are even. "0,2,4,6,8 even numbers are really great; 1,3,5,7,9 odd numbers are so fine".Next week, the Grade 1's will move forward and start learning about odds and evens, counting by 2's and 5's.

Science

The class has started the Senses unit. This week, the students inquired about what they want to learn about during the Senses unit. They came up with some "I wonder..." statements.

Social Studies

This week, the students of 1C discussed Keys to Good Citizenship. They gave examples about their responsibility at home and at school in their Social Studies Journals. Next week, the students will be exploring the key to citizenship.
