Language Arts
I read the book, The Emperor's Egg by Martin Jenkins, to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities revolved around the book. This book is a non-fiction book about a male emperor penguin. While his mate is off swimming in the ocean and catching loads of fish, he stands around in the freezing cold of Antartica with an egg at his feet for two whole months, keeping it warm and watitng for it to hatch. A story about the world's most devoted dad! 1C continues to work on Phoneme Addition (i.e. "Lane. Ass /p/ to the beginning of lane. What's the word?"), Phoneme Substitution (i.e. "Rope. Change /r/ to /s/. What's the new word?" and Phoneme Deletion (i.e. "Say trouble. Say trouble without the /t/.") You can try any these activities at home with your child.
Throughout the week, the students explored the "ch" digraph with words like chop, chick, chin, chief, check. The class did a guided drawing of a chick, so cute!
This week, during Writer's Workshop, we focused on creating a good copy for our last week's writing of "How To Build a Snowman" piece. Can't wait to see how they all turn out!

Math
In Math this week, students learned ordinal numbers up to 10. I challenged them with a couple of warm up activities that required the students to put the ordinal number words in the correct order from first to tenth. They were pretty good at it by the end of the week, good job Grade 1's! The Grade 1's will move forward and start learning about odds and evens, counting by 2's and 5's, and addition.
Science
The class has concluded their Seasonal Changes unit. This week, the students focused on the the types of clothing worn specifically for each of the seasons.
Social Studies
Social Studies
This week, the students of 1C continued to discuss rights and responsibilities. They gave examples about their responsibility at home and at school in their Social Studies Journals. Next week, the students will be exploring the key to citizenship.
