Week 16
A MESSAGE FROM MS. STAROSTECKI...
Skating Week will run from January 21-25 and February 11-14. Each grade will have a half an hour time slot on the ice. The permission form can be completed on Powerschool and it provides permission for both of the skating weeks. Please read the information sheet I have provided in the email.
I would love some parent volunteers for Skating Week, especially for tying up skates. The faster we lace them up the more time the students will have on the ice. Parents are more than welcome to join 1C on the ice and skate. Please let me know if you are able to help me out at the rink!

LANGUAGE ARTS
READING While they are reading the students are practicing the Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Lips the Fish looks at the beginning and ending sound of a word. Stretchy Snake reminds the students to "S-T-R-E-T-C-H" it out and to say each sound slowly then say it fast. Chunky Monkey breaks a word into chunks that the student's already know.
RAINBOW WORDS 1C worked on reviewing their Rainbow Words ranging from Red to Yellow Rainbow Words.
BOOK STUDY Based on the The Gingerbread Man, the students have studied the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the story. 1C did an amazing job writing about a three step process to catch the Gingerbread Man. They learned how to start sentences with First, Next, Last. Some students shared their writing with other classes. They did an amazing job!

SCIENCE
I read the story Mix It Up by Herve Tullet to the class.
It is a fantastic book that explores mixing colours in a fun and interactive way. The students had the opportunity to create their very own Mix It Up paint book. They had so much fun, especially on the last page where they experimented with colours and the different shades they were able to create.SOCIAL STUDIES
Phew! 1C travelled all around the world to find out how countries celebrate Christmas. This week we ended our journey with the countries of Italy, Australia, China and last but not least the North Pole!
In Italy, almost every house has a nativity scene set up. Also, on January 6, La Befana flies around Italy handing out sweets and treats to the children.
In Australia, people celebrate Christmas in the summer time. Santa Claus has to wear shorts and a t-shirt because it is way too hot for his suit! While the reindeer take a rest, six white kangaroos guide Santa's sleigh. 1C had a blast singing along to the song "Six White Boomers".
In China, people decorate their houses with paper chains, paper flowers and paper lanterns. The students had the chance to create their very own lantern. They look great.

The students used their imagination and tried to predict how Christmas is celebrated at the North Pole. They definitely had some interesting suggestions such as the elves have a big party, the elves eat lots of cookies, Santa has a hot tub party...etc.
