MATH

On Tuesday, Zero the Hero paid a visit to the classroom. Grade 1s track the number of days they are in school...all the way to 100! On Tuesday, we made our first bundle of 10 (10 days of school).










This week, 1C explored 3D shapes. They looked at the properties of a sphere, cube, rectangular prism, cone and pyramid. Next week, we will be comparing the similarities and differences between 2D shapes and 3D shapes

LANGUAGE ARTS

READING The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. This week they made it all the way to 3 minutes and 39 seconds! While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Eagle Eye strategy. Eagle Eye serves as a reminder to look at the pictures for clues when reading a book. Keep up the great reading 1C!

PRINTING This week the students practiced and refined their bounce letters (r, n, m, h, b, p). I sent home a printing practice sheet for those letters and please return by Monday. The sheet provides some instructions and tips on how to refine your child's printing. 

ALL ABOUT ME I sent "All About Me" Bags home with some students this week. I will continue to do so at the end of each week. If your child has an All About Me bag, please follow the instructions, and return the bag after the weekend. We will use these bags to learn more about our classmates, learn about asking/answering questions, and participate in shared writing.

LISTENING GAMES I read the book, Recess Queen by  to 1C this week. Our phonological awareness activities were centered around the book this week. In this schoolyard story, Jean is mean because she thinks she's the boss of the playground. She has the rest of kids so scared of her that they don't play, run, swing, or jump. Until one day when a new girl comes and plays, runs, swings and jumps *before* Jean.


SCIENCE

This week we talked about the seasonal cycle: fall, winter, spring, summer. The students dressed our friend, Charlie in clothing that is appropriate for each of the seasons. 1C also learned about the Sun and it's two very important jobs: heat and light.

MESSAGE FROM MS.STAROSTECKI With the warmer weather, I strongly urge parents to send their kids to school with a hat and a water bottle. Also, with those nasty mosquitos buzzing around you can send some bug spray with your child. We want our kiddos to be sun safe and bug bite free! REMINDERS NO SCHOOL (VICTORIA DAY)   on May 21st. Language Arts The Grade 1's continue to work on their goal of 15 minutes during Read to Self. While they Read to Self the students are practicing the Lips the Fish strategy. Lips the Fish gets their lips ready for the beginning and ending sounds. As a whole group, we have been reading "It's Back to School We Go" by Ellen Jackson which illustrates and follows the daily life of a student in a variety of different countries such as Kenya, Russia, and the United States. In Printing, the students practiced and refined their "half moon letters": c,d,g, and q. I will continue to send home "All About Me" bags with some students each week. Housekeeping Reminders: We have had a lot of practice for our Christmas Concert throughout the week but please be sure to practice the songs with your child. Check their book bags for the lyrics for "Frosty the Snowman" ( https://youtu.be/u0QqQNIpeiw ) and "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas"  ( https://youtu.be/VGLGJV01C0Q ) Take the weekend to get plenty of rest, we have a busy week coming up! If your child is not feeling well on Monday please keep them at home so they are feeling their best for the Christmas Concert!
